Have you heard about the disasters these days? Recently, we have encountered different heart-breaking news. Yes.. I am definitely sad about the Sewol ferry tragedy. Although I was not in Korea at the moment it happened, I also felt the grief Korea was going through. It has caused the deaths of hundreds of innocent and young lives who were to bloom in this world. I just can't help but think that the tragedy was made worse when the government did not immediately take actions and the captain was the first ones to escape. Some are still yet to be rescued and some families still stand in the port, waiting and praying for their loved ones. In my point of view as a teenager, I am just sad about the irresponsibility of the government and some of the crew members.. Well.. I feel sadder about it because some of them are as young as I am.. I am yet to achieve my dreams and so are they.. But still, I am thankful for all the care and support from all around the world. However, again, before I was to recover from the grief for this tragedy, another disaster happened in our neighbor country, Turkey and I think same mistakes are happening over and over again.

What has happened in Turkey?
Last May 13, 2014, there was a mine explosion in Soma, Turkey. I was really sad and shocked to hear this news as it has only been less than a month that almost 300 people were sacrificed from the Sewol ferry tragedy. I hoped and hoped that no more of these disasters would happen. It was really heart-breaking to read the news on the internet about the explosion in Turkey. They assume that this disaster was possibly caused by overheating of the coal in the mine which caused the miners to die due to its thick smoke and carbon monoxide.

Again, many people are arguing about the cause of this tragedy like what has been done in my country, Korea, about the Sewol ferry. Most of the people are concerned with the administration of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister of Turkey at present. Like other people, I am also curious if the inspection on this mine has been done properly which could have prevented the deaths of these miners. Some news report that the miners were even using gas masks that were 15 years past the expiration date. I do not intend to put all the blame on the government but it really saddens me how the poor actions of the Korea government in response to the Sewol disaster seem to be happening again in Turkey.

End of the search

The Turkish government decided to end the search in just 5 days after the tragedy. The government decided to close the case with 301 deaths while the worker's union was arguing that there are still more than a hundred of people who are still left inside the mine. What makes me feel more depressed is the fact that the government decided to close the mine with bricks even though some families are still waiting for their sons, husbands and fathers. The government argued that this was to avoid further deaths. Yes.. It is important to stop further sacrifices but do you really think this was the right decision? Well.. For me, I doubt it. Yes.. It is true that it is very important to eliminate further losses but what about the people still left inside the mine? What about the families who cannot even know if their loved ones are alive or not? The search was only 5 days, not 5 weeks or 5 months. I think 5 days was not enough to compensate for the days that the families would have to live under the grief over their loved ones.

The prime minister added to my anger and of the people by saying that, "What happened, happened. It is from God... If you boo the country's prime minister, you get slapped." In addition to that, one of the aides of the prime minister has hit a protester who was going against them. Is this a right thing for a leader of a country? Instead of comforting the families of the victims, the government is fighting against the protests by force. I am really sad to see how the mistakes of dealing with disasters are repeated over and over again.

The most important thing is that despite the large number of deaths, only some people seem to know about it. We have drawn our attention to Sewol ferry disaster as our own disaster and we have cared and supported them through different media forms. However, it is depressing to see that some people are not even aware of the disaster in Turkey. We live in one world and one community under the same sky. I may not be a Turkish, I may not be fully aware of what is happening in Turkey right now but I still want to care and support Turkey. That is my main purpose of writing this post. I hope to address other people to know about this as well because we all belong to the same world despite our differences in citizenship. I am more sad to know and tell you that while I was writing this blog, I have found out that an earthquake has hit Turkey yesterday, May 24. It caused 266 people to be injured once again due to the earthquake. I cannot imagine the hardships that Turkey is going through right now.. Can you?

Different disasters are happening right now at different parts of the world. I am really hoping that we may all come together to pray and care for the victims and their families as if they were our own, regardless of the color, the religion and the citizenship. I just hope that the mistakes would not repeat anymore in any part of the world. As a teenager, I know I cannot do much about these big disasters but I can support and care for them through my prayers. I am not sure if this post would be able to touch the hearts of others but I am hoping that it would at least reach them. To end this post, please let me know about your opinions on these matters and please.. let us all come together to support them.
Pray for Soma
